El Malpais & Petroglyphs National Monument

Last night we sat in one spot on the freeway for over four hours!
There was a bad accident about a mile and a half in front of us. Unfortunately, we had just passed the turn off for a rest stop. Thankfully we were still next to the rest stop so that we could use the restroom. What we couldn't do was unload our livestock. Haha.
So we didn't get to Albuquerque because we hadn't planned on the four hour delay. We located the nearest Walmart and crashed for the night.
This morning this was next to the freeway entrance. El Malpais is protected space surrounded by volcanoes. We hiked through lava rock, but unfortunately the lava tubes were over an hour away and required a 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Maybe next time. Anyway, it was a fun find that we were not planning on.
On the edge of Albuquerque is Petroglyph National Monument. This too was an unplanned stop.
It was fun because the petroglyphs are right in front of you.  At so many parks you have to look far away and even use binoculars to see them so this was pretty cool.

The Macaw

This bit about the Anasazi was interesting. We've found several instances throughout our trip of Native American names that are/were used in history books were inaccurate. (Like "hohokam" just back at Casa Grande)

Driving to the monument, we saw a newly opened hair place offering $8 haircuts so we got 5. (Scott had just cut his and was threatening to cut the boys' himself just this morning! - such perfect timing.)
Kaia's first cut in a shop. Prior to this she's always been trimmed at home. So she enjoyed the experience. (:
We made it to Santa Fe and plan to see the Capitol tomorrow.
