Thomas Jefferson designed this Capitol building. The center building was all that was originally here to house all three branches of the government. They have since expanded, adding the two side buildings.
The statue of him is featured in the new wing of the building and this side of the base highlights the things he wanted to be remembered for.
However, when Jefferson designed it, there was not a statue of himself, but the statue of George Washington in a very prominent place, the center of the building.
Above the statue of Washington is the dome, which cannot be seen from the outside.
Here in the old house chamber is a statue at Robert E. Lee. When the south seceded from the union, this building not only served as the Capitol of the Commonwealth of Virginia, but also as the Capitol of the Confederacy.
Down this hall into one of the additional buildings that were added on either side of the original building, we find the location of the modern-day house
and,at the end of the opposite hallway, the senate.
Our tour guide spent quite a bit of time having a personal conversation with Sy while everyone else listened in and learned. He was the youngest on the tour as there were no other families with children and for the most part he kept up with her and she was impressed.
Outside there was another statue of George Washington, truly honored as our founding leader.
