Brown v Board of Education

This historic site commemorates the 1954 Supreme Court ruling that forced schools to integrate and not be segregated by race.

We saw some familiar faces from other historic places we've been on our trip.
Although the case takes the name "Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas", the Supreme Court case actually was five cases from different states rolled into one.
The Topeka Board of Education had actually done a really good job of trying to make at least their school structures equal. The beautiful school that the historic site is in was once an all black elementary school. And it housed the first African-American kindergarten in the U.S.
At the same time, there were students in the school whose parents had grown up in integrated schools in other parts of the country and were appalled at the fact that their child was required to attend the school because of their race. They knew it wasn't right and they fought and the result was this landmark ruling.
