Lincoln's New Salem - 9/10

This morning we explored the reconstructed village where Abraham Lincoln spent 6 years as a young adult from 1831-1837.
We were able to walk over from our campsite.

The bluegrass festival was still going. In addition to the nightly shows in the amphitheater, anyone who wanted to could set up and play music throughout the village.
Above is a mountain dulcimer. 3 strings and you can play full songs only strumming one string!
Below is a traditional German hammered dulcimer.
Many people arrived with chairs and just sat down for a spell when they liked what they heard.
The village had all the same buildings it dos when Abe was there. This building houses the carding mill.
The Machine above was run by turning the big wheel below.
The big wheel was turned by walking a yoke of oxen up this ramp. They would walk to turn the wheel.

There were quilters and weavers along with a cooper, a blacksmith and a schoolteacher, all representing to the public what life was like in the 1830s.

This was the old saw mill.
After a fun day in the village, we return to our trailer and had lunch before heading out to see lots of this...
